This post is all about how to look younger.
If you search on Google, the term “how to look younger” gets a crazy amount of hits. Want to know another really popular search term?
“I look old.”
And interestingly, “I look old” tends to trend around the first two weeks of November- just in time for people to be taking a look at their holiday photos.
And I’m here to tell you- It might be your makeup.
There is something to be said for aging gracefully, and accepting that our looks will change as we mature, but there are ways that you can appear as youthful as possible. If your makeup is actually preventing you from looking younger- or worse, making you look old…it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do!!
Here are 6 ways that you can look younger!
#1- Put away the powder!
We are all guilty. Somewhere along the way, we were told that the way to finish your makeup look was to dust powder all over your face. Or, we used a foundation that was made up of only mineral powder. And that may have been perfect in our teens and twenties. But powder does you no favors once you’re concerned with looking younger.
For starters, powder makes your skin look dry, which is not a sign of youth! Powder settles into fine lines, enhancing their appearance. Dry skin accentuates fine lines (and deep ones too)! As we age, our skin produces less moisture, and by powdering skin that is already dry, it’s a recipe for an older looking complexion.
The way to use powder on mature skin- if it’s needed- is to press a small amount of powder directly onto the parts of your face that are prone to shine. Using a special brush designed for this purpose, plus a translucent setting powder, gently press the powder onto problem areas to set. That’s all!
#2- Lose the liquid foundation!
Liquid foundation seems like it would be the perfect solution for looking younger! I mean, it’s a liquid! But think about how liquid foundation works- you apply with a brush or sponge, and you have to blendblendblend really fast before it dries. That’s right- it DRIES! That’s also why, later in the day when you want to refresh your makeup before dinner or a night out, you basically have to start over. Because it has dried. And cracked. Because it’s dry.
Catch what I’m saying?
Plus liquid foundation that is too heavy can actually highlight your imperfections. Yuck.
#3- Be careful with eyeliner
We love our eyeliner! And why not? It can make eyes appear larger, and define your lashline to make lashes look thicker. But pencil liners can be a bit harsh for mature faces. Especially if you use a very dark color and circle your entire eye.
Instead, use a shadow as a liner! The line will be softer and more blurred, which is less harsh and doesn’t exaggerate wrinkles. You can also choose any color you like- dark brown is usually more flattering than black! Apply with a small- but not too small brush- and blend!
#4- Use the proper Primer!
To look younger, makeup needs to look fresh and dewy. Not wet or greasy- just not DRY. Most of us over 40 need to change up the primer we’ve been using for years. Especially in the winter, your primer should be moisturizing!
My favorite is Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Primer. I’ve repurchased this several times, and I really love it. If you apply a few drops to your hands, then gently pat into your face, it will absorb within minutes and you can apply your makeup!
A less expensive dupe is the NYX Hydra Touch Oil Primer. I’m using this currently, and I’m really liking it! The main difference for me is the smell- the NYX primer has a lemony smell, and the Smashbox doesn’t have any smell that I can detect. But for the price difference, I think it’s worth a try!
#5- Creme makeup is your friend
I’m not talking about your grandmother’s cream makeup. That stuff was thick and heavy and hard to apply. Cream makeup today is much lighter, and Seint’s cream makeup is made to look like a second skin. Seint cream makeup adds moisture, instead of sucking it out of your skin. It provides hydration, and it is made with hydrating ingredients.
With Seint’s cream makeup, a little bit of product goes a long way because it is so pigmented. Liquid foundation, on the other hand, is made up of lots of water so it takes more product to cover.
Seint makeup melts into skin (and doesn’t dry into a layer that can crack and dry your skin) and can be fixed if you make a mistake because it never dries- perfect if you’re not confident with makeup, or want to be able to change up your look for evening or after work.
#6- Cream Contour and Blush are KEY
If you want to look younger, cream contour and cheek color are super important. Contour becomes important as we age because we lose volume, especially in the cheeks. That’s why injectible fillers are so popular! Our faces tend to lose dimension and become flatter. But you can give the appearance of fuller cheeks and defined cheekbones with contour and cheek color. The correct contour around the edges of the face and just under the cheekbones can make the face appear younger.
Color is important here. All of Seint’s contours are more of an ashy color, since contour is meant to mimic the look of a shadow. Bronzer is NOT good for contouring, since bronzers by definition are more warm- the color is meant to look like a tan from the sun!
Cheek color is as important as contour. A sign of youth is a rosy glow on the cheeks- and the end of the nose. Do not skip the blush ladies!!! Cream cheek color gives a very natural flush, not the powdery racing stripes of our past!! For the most natural look, choose a color that resembles the color of the inside of your lower lip!
